Northern Hungary

Gyöngyös is probably not the first destination to think of but its a good base for daytrips as it is located at the feet of the Sár-hegy and the Mátra Mountains. The city's main attractions are the Zoo, the Saint Bartholomew Church, the Orczy Castle and Mátra Museum, the Doll Museum, the Oxygen Adrenalin Park in Sástó and also there are several scenic spots and lookouts. 

The city of Eger is a gorgeous destination with Baroque churches and towers, beautifully preserved city centre with cobblestone alleys, the medieval Castle of Eger, a picturesque basilica, an Ottoman minaret, Turkish Bath, thermal bath, the Lyceum, Astronomical Museum and Camera Obscura. 

To try the notable (Bikavér), visit the ‘Valley of Beautiful Women’ and its 200 wine cellars.

The "Steel City" used to be a centre of heavy industry. It's downtown and theatre is nice, also there are many museums and galleries, but the main attractions are outside the city - the Castle of Diósgyőr, the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, the Hámori Lake and the caves and hikes of Lillafüred. The "City of Open Gates" is surrounded by the protected forests of the Bükk National Park.

The "Athens of the Bodrog" was a significant cultural centre of the region. It lays in the Bodrog river valley at the feet of Zemplén Mountains. The Rákóczi Castle (is on the 500 Forint banknote), the cellar under it, the Castlechurch, the art gallery and the thermal spa are the most popular attractions, just like the nearby Stone dusty cellars in Hercegkút and the Tarn of Megyer-hegy.

The agricultural city with nice churches, museums and collections, the Bujtosi Lake, the university botanical garden and the arboretum. The most popular attractions can be found in the Sóstó region - the thermal water lake, the spa, an adventure park, the Open-Air Village Museum and the famous Animal Park or Sóstó Zoo which is a 35-hectare area placed in a lovely oak forest. .
